The GL is to Mercedes what the Defender is to Land Rover. It was proposed as a military vehicle in the late 1970s by the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlivi of Iran, a major Daimler-Benz shareholder. In 1979, a civilian version was unveiled and almost 25 years later a 469hp 5.5-litre V8 AMG version was launched.
